AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) Toner

To make an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) toner at home, you’ll need a few simple ingredients. AHA toners are known for their exfoliating properties, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote a brighter complexion. Here’s a basic recipe:

¼ cup Witch hazel
¼ cup Distilled water
2 tbsp Apple cider vinegar (ACV)
1 tbsp Glycolic acid (you can adjust the concentration based on your skin’s sensitivity)
Optional Ingredients:
Essential oil for fragrance (like lavender or tea tree oil)
1 tsp Aloe vera gel for added soothing properties
1.Prepare the Solution: In a clean glass container, combine witch hazel and distilled water. Witch hazel acts as a natural astringent and helps to tighten pores.
2.Add ACV: Pour in the apple cider vinegar. ACV contains acetic acid, which helps to balance the skin’s pH and has mild exfoliating properties.
3.Incorporate Glycolic Acid: Carefully add the glycolic acid to the mixture. Glycolic acid is an AHA derived from sugar cane and is excellent for exfoliating the skin and promoting cell turnover. Start with a lower concentration if you have sensitive skin and gradually increase it over time.
4.Optional Additions: If desired, you can add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance and/or a teaspoon of aloe vera gel for its soothing properties.
5.Mix Well: Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are well combined.
6.Transfer to a Toner Bottle: Use a funnel to pour the toner into a clean, preferably dark glass bottle. Dark glass helps to preserve the integrity of the ingredients by protecting them from light.
Storage and Use:
7.Store the toner in a cool, dark place. Shake well before each use. To apply, saturate a cotton pad with the toner and gently swipe it over your cleansed face and neck, avoiding the eye area. Follow up with a moisturizer. Start by using the toner every other day or every few days to see how your skin reacts, and adjust frequency accordingly.

AHA toners can increase sun sensitivity, so it’s essential to use sunscreen during the day when using products containing AHAs.

Patch Test: Before using the toner on your face, it’s a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of your skin to check for any adverse reactions, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you experience irritation, discontinue use.

This DIY AHA toner is customizable, so feel free to adjust the ingredient proportions based on your skin’s needs and sensitivities.
