How to Make Wax Melts for Candle Burners

Wax melts are small pieces of scented wax that are melted in a wax burner to release fragrance. Unlike candles, wax melts do not contain a wick.

Basic Recipe (500 g)

Ingredients

  • 500 g Soy Wax for Wax Melts
  • 30–50 g Fragrance Oil (6–10%, depending on the wax manufacturer’s recommendation)
  • Wax Dye (optional)

Method

  1. Melt the wax to 75–85°C, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Add the wax dye if using and stir until completely dissolved.
  3. Allow the wax to cool to 65–70°C.
  4. Add the fragrance oil and stir gently for 1–2 minutes to ensure it is evenly mixed.
  5. Pour the wax into silicone moulds or wax melt clamshell moulds.
  6. Leave to cool and harden completely.
  7. Remove the wax melts from the moulds and allow them to cure for 24–72 hours before use for the best scent throw.

Fragrance Load Guide

  • 6% = 30 g fragrance oil per 500 g wax
  • 8% = 40 g fragrance oil per 500 g wax
  • 10% = 50 g fragrance oil per 500 g wax (only if your wax is designed to hold this amount)

How to Use Place one or two wax melts into the dish of a wax burner. Do not add water. Light a tealight candle underneath the burner or switch on an electric wax warmer. As the wax melts, it will release its fragrance into the room. Once the scent fades, allow the wax to cool and solidify before removing it and replacing it with a fresh wax melt.

Tips

  • Use fragrance oils that are suitable for candles and wax melts.
  • Do not add carrier oils, as they can affect the performance of the wax.
  • Silicone moulds make it easy to remove the finished wax melts.
  • Store wax melts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
