BHA (beta hydroxy acid) toners are popular in skincare routines for their ability to exfoliate the skin, penetrate pores to remove excess oil, and treat acne. Here’s a simple recipe for a DIY BHA toner:
.Prepare Your Workspace: Make sure all your tools and containers are clean and sterilized to prevent any contamination.
.Mix Witch Hazel and Water: In a clean bowl, mix together witch hazel and distilled water in equal parts. This will act as the base for your toner.
.Add Salicylic Acid: Carefully measure and add the salicylic acid powder or liquid to the witch hazel and water mixture. Stir well until it’s completely dissolved. Be cautious with the amount of salicylic acid you add, especially if you have sensitive skin. Start with a smaller amount and gradually increase if needed.
.Incorporate Aloe Vera Gel (Optional): If you want to add soothing properties to your toner, mix in 1-2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Aloe vera can help calm irritated skin and provide hydration.
.Optional: Add Tea Tree Oil: If you want to enhance the acne-fighting properties of your toner, add 5-10 drops of tea tree essential oil. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that can help combat acne-causing bacteria.
.Transfer to a Bottle: Once all the ingredients are well mixed, pour the toner into a clean, sterilized glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid. Amber or dark-colored bottles are preferred to protect the solution from light exposure, which can degrade some ingredients.
.Label and Store: Label your DIY BHA toner with the date of preparation and the ingredients used. Store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness.
.After cleansing your face, apply the BHA toner to a cotton pad and gently swipe it over your skin, focusing on areas prone to breakouts or congestion. Avoid the delicate eye area. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer and sunscreen during the day, as BHA can increase sun sensitivity.
.It’s essential to do a patch test before using any new skincare product, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately. Additionally, consult with a dermatologist if you have any concerns or specific skin conditions.
