Kojic Acid Face Serum

Kojic acid is often used in skincare products for its skin-lightening and brightening properties. Here’s a simple recipe to create a kojic acid serum at home:

Ingredients:

  1. Distilled Water: 80ml
  2. Kojic Acid Powder: 2-3 grams (This may vary depending on the concentration you desire, start with a lower amount and adjust as needed)
  3. Vegetable Glycerin: 10ml (Acts as a humectant to keep skin moisturized)
  4. Vitamin C Powder (Ascorbic Acid): 1 gram (Optional, enhances the effectiveness of kojic acid)
  5. Preservative: A few drops (Optional, to extend the shelf life of your serum. Opt for a preservative suitable for skincare products, like Germaben II or Optiphen Plus)
  6. Glass Dropper Bottle: To store the serum

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your workspace: Make sure all your equipment and containers are clean and sterilized to prevent contamination.
  2. Mix the kojic acid: In a small container, dissolve the kojic acid powder into the distilled water. Stir well until the powder is completely dissolved. This may take some time and gentle heating might help speed up the process, but avoid boiling.
  3. Add the other ingredients: Once the kojic acid is fully dissolved, add the vegetable glycerin and vitamin C powder (if using). Stir well to combine.
  4. Add preservative: If you’re using a preservative, add it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This is crucial for preventing bacterial or fungal growth in your serum.
  5. Transfer to bottle: Using a funnel, carefully pour the serum into a glass dropper bottle. Make sure the bottle is clean and sterilized before transferring the serum.
  6. Label and store: Label your serum with the date of creation and the ingredients used. Store the serum in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.

Usage:

  • Use this serum in your skincare routine, preferably in the evening.
  • Before applying, cleanse your face thoroughly.
  • Apply a few drops of the serum onto your fingertips and gently massage it into your skin.
  • Follow up with a moisturizer if needed.
  • Always wear sunscreen during the day when using products containing kojic acid, as it can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

Remember to perform a patch test before using the serum on your face, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you experience any irritation or adverse reactions, discontinue use immediately.
