DIY Solid Perfume Balm

Make Your Own Beautiful Solid Perfume

Solid perfume is a gorgeous little fragrance balm that you can carry in your handbag and apply whenever you want a quick fragrance refresh.

Unlike a traditional spray perfume, solid perfume is completely water-free and is applied directly to pulse points such as the wrists, neck and behind the ears.

It is also incredibly easy to make!

What You Will Need

Ingredients – 50 g batch

• Beeswax – 15 g
• Jojoba Oil – 20 g
• Fractionated Coconut Oil or another lightweight carrier oil – 14 g
• Vitamin E – 0.5 g
• Cosmetic-grade fragrance oil – 0.5–1 g

Important: Check the fragrance supplier’s maximum recommended usage rate for leave-on products before adding it.

Equipment

• Digital scale
• Heat-resistant glass jug
• Stainless-steel spoon or spatula
• Small double boiler or water bath
• Small perfume tins or cosmetic pots
• 70% alcohol for sanitising equipment
• Gloves

Method

Step 1 – Prepare Your Equipment

Clean and sanitise your equipment, work surface and containers.

Allow everything to dry completely.

Step 2 – Melt the Wax

Place the beeswax, jojoba oil and lightweight carrier oil into a heat-resistant container.

Heat gently in a water bath until the beeswax has completely melted.

Do not overheat the mixture.

Step 3 – Cool Slightly

Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes.

You want it to remain liquid, but not be extremely hot.

Step 4 – Add Vitamin E

Add the Vitamin E and stir thoroughly.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps slow oxidation of the oils. It is not a preservative.

Step 5 – Add Your Fragrance

Add your chosen cosmetic-grade fragrance oil and mix thoroughly.

Try beautiful combinations such as:

• Vanilla & floral
• Rose & vanilla
• Lavender & citrus
• Sandalwood & vanilla
• Tobacco & vanilla
• Your favourite perfume-inspired fragrance

Step 6 – Pour

Immediately pour the mixture into small cosmetic tins or pots.

Allow to cool completely at room temperature.

Do not put the containers into the refrigerator as rapid cooling can affect the finished texture.

How To Use

Swipe a small amount of solid perfume onto your fingertips and apply lightly to your:

• Wrists
• Behind the ears
• Neck
• Décolletage

Reapply whenever required.

Formulation Tips

Too Hard?

Reduce the beeswax slightly and increase the carrier oil.

Too Soft?

Increase the beeswax slightly.

Want a More Luxurious Feel?

Jojoba oil makes an excellent choice for solid perfume because it has a silky skin feel and is relatively stable compared with many other plant oils.

Small screw-top tins make beautiful packaging for solid perfume.
