Golden Bronze Tinted Body Lotion

Create a beautiful, moisturising body lotion with a subtle warm golden-bronze tint. Brown iron oxide provides the colour, while gold mica adds a soft luminous glow.

This is a temporary cosmetic tint and does not chemically tan the skin. The colour will gradually wash away.

Equipment

• Accurate digital scale
• Two heat-resistant containers
• Stick blender or suitable homogeniser
• Thermometer

Method

Phase A – Water Phase

1. Weigh the distilled water into a sanitised heat-resistant container.
2. Add the glycerine and mix well.
3. Heat the water phase to approximately 70–75°C.

Phase B – Oil Phase

1. In a separate container, combine the emulsifying wax, carrier oil and shea butter.
2. Add the brown iron oxide and gold mica to the oil phase.
3. Mix extremely well to disperse the pigments evenly and eliminate visible lumps.
4. Heat the oil phase to approximately 70–75°C, or until the emulsifying wax and shea butter have completely melted.

Emulsification

1. Slowly add the oil phase to the heated water phase.
2. Blend thoroughly using a stick blender or suitable homogeniser until a smooth, uniform emulsion forms.
3. Continue gentle mixing while the lotion begins to cool.

Cool-Down Phase

1. When the lotion has cooled to below 40°C, add the liquid Aloe Vera, vitamin E, Euxyl PE 9010 and fragrance.
2. Mix thoroughly after each addition.
3. Check the final pH.
4. Adjust the pH if necessary to approximately pH 5.0–5.5, using a suitable cosmetic pH adjuster.
5. Mix gently until completely uniform.
6. Allow the lotion to cool completely before filling.

About Euxyl PE 9010

Euxyl PE 9010 contains Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin and is designed as a broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative. The manufacturer’s recommended use level is 0.5–1.0%, and it is suitable for leave-on formulations.

For this formula, 1% = 10 g per kilogram.

Colour Adjustment

The pigment quantities above are a starting point for a subtle golden-bronze tint.

For your first batch, I recommend making a 100 g trial batch before producing the complete kilogram.

If you want a deeper colour, increase the brown iron oxide gradually rather than adding a large amount at once.

If you want more luminosity, increase the gold mica very gradually. Too much mica can make the product look shimmery or glittery rather than naturally radiant.

Always use cosmetic-grade pigments specifically suitable for leave-on products.

Because this is a water-containing cosmetic product, a preservative is essential. Preservation should ideally be verified with appropriate microbiological testing/challenge testing before commercial sale.

A smooth, moisturising body lotion with a subtle warm golden-bronze appearance and a soft luminous finish.

The brown iron oxide provides the temporary skin tint, while the gold mica provides the glow. The product is not a self-tanner and does not change the skin’s natural melanin production.
