Syndet Shampoo Bar Recipe
This shampoo bar recipe is designed to give good cleansing, creamy foam, conditioning, and a harder long-lasting bar. Syndet bars are gentler than traditional soap shampoo bars because they are formulated closer to the scalp’s natural pH.
Phase A – Heated Phase
• SCI Powder/Noodles – 40%
• SLSa – 20%
• Cocamidopropyl Betaine – 12%
• BTMS-50 – 4%
• Cetyl Alcohol – 5%
• Cocoa Butter – 5%
• Glycerine – 3%
• Distilled Water – 5%
Phase B – Cool Down
• Hydrolyzed Protein – 1%
• Panthenol (Vitamin B5) – 1%
• Preservative – 1%
• Fragrance / Essential Oils – 3%
Method:
- Wear a dust mask and gloves when handling powdered surfactants.
- Combine all Phase A ingredients in a double boiler.
- Heat slowly while stirring until a thick dough-like consistency forms. Avoid overheating.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Add Phase B ingredients and mix thoroughly.
- Press firmly into moulds.
- Leave for 24–48 hours before unmoulding.
- Allow bars to dry for 3–7 days for improved hardness.
Important:
• Test the pH using a 10% dilution in distilled water.
• Aim for a pH between 4.5–5.5 for scalp-friendly shampoo bars.
• Adjust with a citric acid solution if required.
• Always use a broad-spectrum preservative suitable for surfactant systems.
Customising Your Bar:
Dry Hair: Increase BTMS slightly and reduce SLSa.
Oily Hair: Reduce butter content and increase SCI slightly.
Sensitive Scalps: Replace some SLSa with more SCI for a gentler cleanse.
