How to Make Gel Wax Candles
Gel wax candles are beautiful, transparent candles that allow you to suspend decorative items inside the candle. Gel wax is made from mineral oil and polymer resin and is only suitable for glass containers.
What You Will Need
Gel candle wax
Heat-resistant glass candle jar
Zinc-core gel candle wick with sustainer
Wick holder or chopsticks
Gel-safe fragrance oil (up to 3% by weight)
Liquid candle dye (optional)
Double boiler
Thermometer
Wooden stirring stick
Heat gun (optional, for removing bubbles)
Decorative non-flammable items (optional), such as glass beads, sea shells, or coloured sand
Never use dried flowers, leaves, plastic, wood, or other flammable decorations inside gel candles.
Step 1: Prepare the Jar
Wash and dry the glass container thoroughly.
Secure the wick to the bottom using the sustainer.
Keep the wick centred with a wick holder.
Step 2: Melt the Gel Wax
Place the gel wax into a double boiler.
Heat slowly to 95–110°C.
Avoid overheating above 110°C, as this can cause yellowing and reduce clarity.
Step 3: Add Colour
If desired, add a small amount of liquid candle dye designed for gel candles.
Stir gently to avoid creating bubbles.
Step 4: Add Fragrance
Allow the wax to cool slightly to around 90–95°C.
Add up to 3% gel-safe fragrance oil and stir gently.
Example:
500 g gel wax = up to 15 g fragrance oil
Using too much fragrance can make the candle cloudy and may create a fire hazard.
Step 5:
Pour the Gel
Slowly pour the gel into the prepared container.
Pouring slowly helps reduce bubbles.
If bubbles appear, gently warm the outside of the glass with a heat gun to help release them.
Step 6: Allow to Cool
Leave the candle undisturbed until completely cool.
Do not move the candle while it is setting.
Step 7: Trim the Wick
Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm before lighting.
Safety Tips
Always use heat-resistant glass containers.
Burn on a heat-safe surface.
Keep away from children and pets.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Do not burn for more than 3–4 hours at a time.
Stop burning when about 10 mm of gel remains at the bottom of the container.
Beginner Tips
Less fragrance gives better clarity.
Stir gently to avoid bubbles.
Always use wicks made specifically for gel candles.
Test burn every new candle before selling to ensure a safe, even burn.
With a little practice, gel wax candles can produce stunning crystal-clear designs that make excellent gifts or products for sale.
