Beginner Lip Balm Recipe (Twist-Up Tubes)

Makes: Approximately 50 g (about 10 × 5 ml twist-up tubes)

Formula

  • Beeswax – 25% (12.5 g)
  • Sweet Almond Oil – 40% (20 g)
  • Shea Butter – 20% (10 g)
  • Cocoa Butter – 10% (5 g)
  • Castor Oil – 5% (2.5 g)

Optional

  • Lip-safe flavour oil – 0.5–2% (deduct the same percentage from the sweet almond oil)
  • Oil-soluble lip-safe colour – as required

Method

  1. Sanitise all equipment and containers.
  2. Place the beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and castor oil into a heatproof beaker.
  3. Melt gently over a double boiler until completely melted.
  4. Remove from the heat and stir gently.
  5. Add the flavour oil and colour (if using) and mix well.
  6. Pour immediately into twist-up tubes.
  7. Leave undisturbed until completely cool before capping.

Notes

  • This is an anhydrous (water-free) formula, so a preservative is not required.
  • If desired, Vitamin E (0.5%) may be added as an antioxidant to help delay oxidation of the oils. It is not a preservative.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

This formula produces a firm, smooth lip balm suitable for standard twist-up lip balm tubes.
