- 300g Coconut Oil
- 200g Palm Oil (or substitute with shea butter)
- 100g Castor Oil
Lye Solution
- 140g Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
- 300g Distilled Water
Additives
- A small pinch of Tussah silk fibres (about pea-sized)
- 20–30g Fragrance or Essential Oil (optional)
✨ Why Use Tussah Silk?
- Creates a silky, luxurious skin feel
- Improves slip and glide during use
- Adds a soft, subtle sheen to finished bars
🧪 Method
1. Prepare Your Workspace
- Wear gloves and goggles
- Work in a well-ventilated area
2. Make the Lye Solution
- Add Tussah silk fibres to the distilled water
- Slowly add lye to the water (never the other way around)
- Stir until fully dissolved
The silk will melt into the hot lye solution and may appear slightly cloudy.
3. Melt the Oils
- Combine all oils and melt gently
- Allow to cool to around 35–40°C
4. Mix to Trace
- Pour the lye solution into the oils
- Stick blend until light trace
5. Add Fragrance
- Stir in fragrance or essential oil
6. Pour & Cure
- Pour into your mould
- Insulate and leave for 24–48 hours
- Unmould and cure for 4–6 weeks
💡 Tips for Success
- Use only a tiny amount of silk — too much can leave residue
- Make sure the silk fully dissolves (no visible strands)
- Perfect for simple, natural soap designs
🌸 Optional Add-Ons
- Kaolin clay for extra creaminess
- Honey for added moisture
- Oatmeal for gentle exfoliation
